We do encourage students to apply for housing as soon as possible. The earlier you apply the better. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee that is due upfront.
Once you apply for admission to the University you are given a student ID number. To get that number you can call Admissions at 612-625-2008.
If you are having problems with your Internet ID and/or password you should contact the tech department at 612-301-HELP (4357). You may also print off the application, found at www.housing.umn.edu/applying, and send that in.
The Online Housing Application only works with PCs running Internet Explorer. If you do not have access to a PC, you can print off a copy of the application and mail it to us. The .pdf version of the Housing Application can be found under the Apply for Housing link on our website.
The two things you need to submit for an application to be complete is the application itself and the $25 application fee. After you complete the application you will receive a confirmation through e-mail after a few days. If you did not fill out preferences (building, room type, and meal plan) you can do so by logging into the “Online Housing Account” on the home page, or by going to www.housing.umn.edu/housing_preferences.
9 times out of 10 the application goes through fine. There is a few days delay before you would get the confirmation e-mail, however, if you are able to log into the “Online Housing Account” then we received your application and you can check to make sure the $25 fee went through.
The question really comes down to what the student prefers. Students should look at the information that we provide about each of our Residence Halls and Apartments when trying to decide how they should rank them on the application.
Yes, you can apply for an LLC even if you have not been accepted into the program yet. However, you will only be assigned to the LLC if you are accepted into the LLC by May 31.
Typically, you will receive an e-mail response within 3 business days.
The March 1 deadline is a priority deadline for students that are interested in living in an LLC to apply for housing. In reality, some LLCs fill up before March 1 and some will continue to have space well after March 1.
The $250 payment is referred to as the Housing Guarantee Payment. It lets us know that you are serious about living on campus with us. In order to receive a housing assignment, you must have received a Housing Guarantee from Housing and make the $250 payment by May 31st.
The payment is due by May 31st for new incoming students.
Yes, you can pay online with a credit card.
As long as the payment is made by May 31st, there is no benefit or penalty. If the payment is made after May 31st, you will not be assigned in the first group of students and there the possibility that you will not be assigned Housing.
If you cannot open the PDF attachment, please e-mail us at housing@umn.edu so that we can resend it to you.
In addition, please make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.
Please visit www.housing.umn.edu/housing_preferences. Changes to your room preferences will be accepted until May 31st.
Making changes to your application will not affect your application complete date.
It is an opportunity for incoming freshman to answer a few questions about themselves and about a preferred roommate, and receive information about who they might be compatible with based on how they answered the questions.
Only new incoming freshman that have not preferenced an LLC.
Students will answer questions about themselves and questions about their desired roommates (like sleeping habits for example). Then the system will compare those answers with other student’s responses and give the student a list of other students that are compatible. We then encourage students to contact each other and if they wish to request each other as roommates they would need to add each other to their applications.
We will send out invitations to students through e-mail with the link to the program.
