Housing & Residential Life
Office and Staff
The Housing & Residential Life Office is located in Comstock Hall East. The office has five major components: residential life, facilities, administrative operations, fiscal operations and the off-campus housing listing service.
The Housing & Residential Life Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you have questions, stop by the office, e-mail us at housing@umn.edu or call our office at 612-624-2994.
Residence Life Staff
Residence Director (RD), Assistant Residence Director (ARD)
RD and ARDs are full-time professional staff members who work and live in the residence halls/apartments. RDs have overall responsibility for the hall and directly supervise the hall office staff and the Community Advisors. The ARD assists the RD with the overall operation of the specific hall. The five halls with ARD’s are Frontier, Middlebrook, Centennial, Territorial, and Wilkins.
The RD/ARDS in each hall/apartment are responsible for:
- Working with the maintenance/custodial and dining service staff in the hall/apartment
- Coordinating all residence hall programs and services
- Advising the community councils
- Meeting informally with students to resolve violations of residence hall/apartment complex regulations
- Implementing administrative policies and procedures
The RD or ARD is available to meet with you on a walk-in basis or by appointment.
Community Advisor (CA)
Community Advisors are upper-class students who have been hired based on their leadership skills, communication skills, creativity, and sincere interest in working with the residence hall/apartment complex students. CAs are responsible for planning educational and social programs and activities, advising their house government, advising students and enforcing residence hall/apartment complex regulations. CAs receive special training related to the transitional needs of students. Their focus is to help make the university experience successful and rewarding for students. A CA on duty can be reached via cell phone when the hall/apartment office is closed. These numbers are posted at the information desk.
Business Operations Supervisor (BOS)
Each hall/apartment has a Business Operations Supervisor who can answer your questions and concerns related to your residence hall/apartment complex contract and policies and procedures. The Business Operations Supervisor office is in the main office of each hall/apartment.
Security Monitor staff (SM)
Each hall/apartment has a Security Monitor(SM) on duty from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. each day of the week. These staff members are responsible for making interior rounds of the hall/apartment, responding to hall/apartment emergencies, and enforcing regulations. SMs can be contacted by calling 624-WALK. The number for the SM and the CA on duty is posted at the information desk in each building.
Information Desk staff
The desk staff is responsible for managing the functions of the desk (e.g., equipment checkout and mail distribution). The desk staff also serves as an information resource for residents. Each residence community will have a Night Manager (NM) on duty from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. each day. These staff members are responsible for support in responding to residence hall/apartment complex emergencies, enforcing regulations, and providing many Information Desk services. NMs can be contacted by calling the Information Desk of each community. Phone numbers for the CA and SM on duty are posted at the information desk and available through the NM on duty. The Information Desk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year with limited hours on holidays.
Other Student Staff
- Computer Center Coordinators (CCC) manage the computer center in each hall, answer residents’ questions, and assist with troubleshooting.
- Community Development Coordinators (CDC) provide programming and student organization support in Bailey, Pioneer, Comstock, University Village, and Yudof halls.
- Student Facilities Workers assist the full time facilities staff with a variety of maintenance and custodial related services.
Facilities Operations Supervisor (FOS)
The Facilities Operations Supervisor (FOS) is the full-time staff member responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and custodial functions of the hall/apartment. The supervisor conducts regularly scheduled building inspections and directs the work of the full-time and student employees who are responsible for cleaning and maintaining public areas in the hall/apartment and responding to work orders.
Maintenance and Custodial Staff
Each building has a team of full time and student custodial and maintenance staff. They strive to keep the residence hall/apartment complex clean and well maintained. The custodial staff cleans all public areas Monday-Friday. Maintenance staff typically responds to work order requests within 24 hours Monday-Friday and conduct regular maintenance on building equipment.
Facilities and Custodial Operations for University Village
University Village is staffed with full-time facilities and custodial employees through Great Lakes Management. The staff maintains and cleans public areas in the complex.
Food Service Director
The Food Service Director is a full-time staff member who is responsible for the operation of the residence hall dining facility. The director works with a staff of full-time and student employees to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals in a manner that meets the diverse needs of residence hall/apartment complex students.
