Sanford Hall is located on the Minneapolis campus near Dinkytown, a commercial and eating establishment area on the East Bank. Sanford has its own dining hall located in the building. The East Bank is home to programs such as Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Women's Studies, Psychology, Architecture, and Language Studies among others. Sanford is located near Williams (basketball) and Mariucci (hockey) Arenas, the University Hospital/Health Sciences complex, the new Sports Pavilion, University Recreational Center, Natatorium (swimming) and Stadium Village, a local shopping and eating area. From Sanford, these buildings are easily accessible by foot, bike, and the free campus shuttle system.
Sanford Hall was constructed in 1910 and expanded with the addition of a tower unit in 1964. Sanford was originally built to house women and was named after Maria L. Sanford, Professor of Rhetoric and Elocution at the University from 1880-1909. In the 1970s, the hall became a coeducational unit housing 502 residents. Its original colonial-style architecture provides for a variety of room styles in the older part of the building. This section is popular with returning students. The "tower" is reserved for incoming first-year freshmen.
Nestled between the Tower and Reno sides of Sanford Hall, the Information Desk keeps a watchful eye on all those entering from the front or back of the Hall. The Sanford Information Desk, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, has some of the most resourceful, entertaining, and service-oriented staff this side of 15th Ave. Recently renovated, the desk has a nice, open-air layout which invites residents and guests to ask questions or visit with or professional student staff.
At the Sanford Information Desk, residents can check out vacuums named after fun cultural characters like the Brady Bunch or Homestar Runner. They can also choose from an ever-changing plethora of DVDs and videos to watch quietly in their room. The staff at the information desk also can check out board games, sports equipment, keys to Sanford's computer lab, and tools.
Sanford Community Council is a student run organization that consists of an Executive Board and a General Body. Numerous student representatives specialize in areas such as philanthropy, diversity, newsletters, and facilities. Each House sends two representatives (who make up the General Body) and these individuals vote to determine how Sanford funds are allocated amongst the various programs in the building and around campus. All residents of Sanford are welcome to participate.
Residents may get involved with Community Council by contacting their Community Advisor or coming to a General Body meeting.
