1. What is the advantage of lofting or bunking a bed?

Lofting and bunking beds offer a lot of storage space underneath them. Therefore, lofting and bunking beds will also allow for more space to move about the room. Lofted beds provide 55” of space underneath the bed. Twin size beds that are not lofted have the capability to be 27” off the ground.

2. How do I know if my room can have a loft or bunk?

Information about whether a room can be lofted or bunked is available on a resident’s assignment letter or the online move-in guide.

3. Should I consult my roommate before I order a loft? bunk?

We recommend that you discuss loft and bunk plans with your roommate. If you choose to bunk your beds only 1 person should order the bunk. Lofts should be ordered individually.

4. Can I build my own loft/bunk?

Residents are NOT allowed to build their own loft or bunk. In order to have a loft, students must use University of Minnesota provided lofts.

5. Are there enough lofts for everyone that requests one?

Some halls have enough lofts for most requests, however we recommend that you reserve your loft as soon as possible. Loft request will be fulfilled on a first come basis. If we run out in a particular residence hall there will be a waitlist until one becomes available.

6. If I do not place my order before the August 14 deadline, can I still get a loft bunk?

If there is still a supply of materials for lofts and/or bunks, the vendor Collegiate Marketing will distribute them after move-in. However, they will not be in your room when you arrive at our hall and most likely will not be delivered until a few days after the official residence hall opening.

7. How much does it cost to have a loft/bunk?

The cost of a loft is $50 + tax and each resident will need to reserve their own loft. The cost to have your beds bunked is $50 + tax per set and only 1 roommate needs to order the bunk.

8. Am I required to have a safety rail?

Each loft and top bunk requires a safety rail.

9. The web site says my room cannot have a loft, why is that?

Some room configurations do not allow a loft or bunk beds. Some rooms come with the beds pre bunked or pre lofted or a combination. This is done because of the room type or configuration.

10. What happens if I order a loft/bunk and cancel my contract or move rooms prior to move-in?

If you cancel your housing contract and inform Collegiate Marketing before August 14, 2009 you will get a refund. If you move rooms and have ordered a loft, it can be placed in your new room if it can have a loft. If the room cannot have a loft, you should contact Collegiate Marketing and request a refund.

If you move rooms and have requested a bunk bed, you should confirm your new room can have a bunk bed. If it can have a bunk bed you should contact your new roommate (if applicable) and verify he/she has not already ordered a bunk bed. If they have already ordered a bunk bed, you should contact Collegiate marketing to request a refund. If you change rooms, cancel your contract, etc, we would recommend that you alert your roommate.

11. Do I have to have a loft/bunk agreement?

All residents using the loft or bunk must agree to the terms of use. All residents have the opportunity to agree to the terms as part of the Resident Information online process. It is located at www.housing.umn.edu/loftpolicy.
