Apply for Housing


Important Information

Students must apply for admission to the University but do not need to be accepted before applying for housing.

All applicants are encouraged to apply early, as the order of assignments is based on application complete dates. Review all Housing Application Information and Housing Contract sections before applying. Have questions? Check our FAQs for answers.

Application Checklist

  1. Initiate your University of Minnesota Internet ID - you will need your Student ID number, Social Security number and birth date
     
  2. Begin the housing application by agreeing to the terms of the contract
     
  3. Submit your $25 non-refundable Housing Application Fee - this payment is due with your application and establishes your complete date
     
  4. Indicate your profile, contact, and meal plan information - name, birth date, gender, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, et cetera.
     
  5. Indicate your Living Learning Community, roommate, building, and room type preferences - may be updated through May 31st
     
  6. Add, change or remove a specific roommate request - must be complete before June 1st
     
  7. Send your parent's signature - only if you are under 18 when you submit your application fee payment
     
  8. Submit your $250 University Enrollment Confirmation Fee - completed through Admissions, not through Housing & Residential Life. This payment is due May 1st
     
  9. Submit your $200 Housing Guarantee Payment - Cannot be submitted until after you have been offered a housing guarantee. The first set of guarantees will be sent January 22nd. This payment is due May 15th.
     
  10. Wait until the week of July 31st for your assignment notification

     

Canceling Your Housing Application

New Incoming First-Year Students

You may cancel your University Housing application-contract before the start of the contract period by one of the following methods:

  1. Email the cancellation to housing@umn.edu by August 1.*
  2. Submit a letter of cancellation by August 1.* Include applicant name, U of M Student ID, and applicant signature. Send the cancellation letter to:

*If a student cancels his or her housing application-contract after August 1, his/her $200 Housing Guarantee Payment will be forfeited. If the Housing Guaranteed Payment was deferred for financial aid, the applicant will be billed $200 to their student account. Students who decide not to live in housing after August 1, need to cancel their housing application-contract to avoid being billed additional room and dining charges.

Returning Residents

Returning residents assigned to a residence hall room or apartment:

  • Students who participate in the on-campus housing reapplication process must cancel their housing application-contract by April 15 in order to be released from their housing-application contract, and to receive a refund of the $200 housing guarantee payment (if applicable). Returning students will not be permitted to cancel their housing application-contract after April 15, the date by which the housing application-contract is a legally binding contract with the University of Minnesota's Housing & Residential Life Department.
  • Beginning April 16, returning residents will have to complete a contract release request if they wish to be released from their housing application-contract. Most requests will not be approved. More information about the contract release process can be found below. The contract release request form can be obtained by sending an email to housing.umn.edu.
  • Prior to April 15 returning residents interested in canceling their application-contract may do so by emailing housing@umn.edu. Students must include their first and last name and U of M student ID number in the cancellation request. Requests should be sent from U of M email accounts.
  1. Email the cancellation to housing@umn.edu before April 15.
  2. Submit a letter of cancellation before April 15. Include applicant name, U of M Student ID, and applicant signature. Send the cancellation letter to:

Cancellations during the contract period

Contract Release Request and Termination During the Contract Period
Residents may be granted a release from their contract during the contract period without financial penalty for any of the following reasons, if the reason is documented:

  1. Withdrawal/transfer from the University
  2. Graduation
  3. Marriage
  4. Declaration of same gender domestic partnership
  5. Study abroad or University-related internship (non-metro area)
  6. Call to active military duty

Before submitting a housing application-contract, you must review the information contained in the online Housing Contract through the links on this page. You are responsible for knowing all the information contained in the contract. Upon submitting an application-contract, you acknowledge the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities has provided you with online access to the Housing Contract. You agree to comply with all University of Minnesota/Housing & Residential Life policies, rules and regulations and the Housing & Residential Life Contract Terms and Provisions.
